Day 10

Today's challenge is to wear a closet orphan. Something that hasn't been touched in a while and is needing to either reenter my wardrobe or be banned forever.

I decided to go a little bold and pull something out of my closet that's been sitting there, untouched, unscathed, unworn for a. long. time. And this is what I came up with:

Here's the look:
Thrifted
Keep or ban? I kind of love it, in a grandma kind of way. And the best part is, I don't have to try to pair a shirt or pants with it, it's all right there for me. Genius!

Ok, ok, flattering and all as it may be, that's not really my outfit, shocker, I know! But when I spotted this baby at the thrift store a few weeks back, I couldn't say no. Just look at it. And look, it was free. That's right, I didn't spend one penny on it. Had it been a penny, I would have left it there, promise. For some reason though, I just couldn't leave the store without it. I mean, I could have, and I almost did, but the moment I realized it was a pant suit ensemble, and not a dress I had to take it. I also had three thoughts in mind for this prized procession (that term is used very loosely here).

1- Hello, halloween is coming up and this has all kinds of awesomeness written all over it (I kid you not when I tell you it gives me a wedgie when I wear it)

2- Free fabric that I'm sure I can put to good use some way or another

3- If I don't take it off the rack, someone else will, and perhaps they'll actually wear it. Really, I'm doing all human kind a favor by taking it out of the store.

My husband was so embarrassed by the outfit he wouldn't even let me go outside to take a picture. He must really love me!

So what closet orphan am I really sporting today.

Here's the real look, and then I'm going to ask you all to please tell me how I should wear this, because I'm totally clueless, hence it's been sitting in my closet untouched, unworn, price tag still on, for over two years.

Shirt: Costco (how I love that store) Jeans: Ann Taylor Loft, Vest: Dillards, years and years ago. Necklace: JCrew, Belt: Thrifted
So, what say you, how would you wear this thing? It's so long I almost feel like it looks like I'm wearing a towel from behind. I tried to pair it with a khaki pencil skirt, but seeing that it was longer than the skirt, it just didn't look right.

I've never felt so stumped over an item of clothing before...I probably should have left it in the store for that very reason, but something about it was calling my name. Now, I just need help figuring out how to actually wear the darn thing so I can call it's name. Suggestions and comments are VERY welcomed! If chucking it is your suggestion, that's fine too, because I may or may not be leaning towards that anyway.

Mwah!

Oh boy. That first outfit made me cringe and I'm so glad it was a joke.

So for the vest. You know I have to be honest. Trash it. It looks like something that maybe was in style for like 5 minutes 5-10 years ago. It looks okay from the front, but from the back it's just odd.

There you have it.

I do have to say that since you are so gorgeous, you can pull anything off, regardless of if it's in style or not, but I would still bag that vest.

I DIED when I saw the jumpsuit. I was like, "Oh man, I'm not sure how I'm going to think up a nice comment to leave on this one..."

As for the vest, maybe wear it like this?

Belted over a flowy white vest or skirt? I love that look on Emily; I'm sure it would work for you too!

love the jumpsuit. you're awesome. and brave. :o)

as far as the vest goes - I'd actually pair it with anything but what you're wearing it with - the white shirt. it's too bland for me. I'd pair it with a color and maybe a pattern? It has potential....

I wish you could have seen my face when I saw the jumpsuit. You're hilarious, though! Loved it. I'm not sure about the vest. I want it to be a few inches shorter. If Kayla's idea doesn't work, I'd say just get rid of it. 2 years with the price tag still on is a LONG time. If you want one final shot at asking people how to wear it, submit it to http://asktheduplex.blogspot.com/ I love those girls, and the readers give helpful suggestions.

Very FUNNY!!!! Hard to imagine whoever designed it!
ha ha ha ha

the "other" outfit looks cute. You have such a knack of accessorizing!

I thought the jumpsuit was your pajamas at first...

Now, this advice may come from me being a hoarder and hating to throw anything out, but is there anyway you can alter them? Like make the vest shorter, turn the jumpsuit into a dress?

... or put both of them into the donation pile :D

Hahahhahahahahah! What a trip!
In seriousness, the sweater, if hemmed up about 12" could be really fun. Are you crafty? Make it happen and you could wind up with a fun summery staple.

That pantsuit? It is a gem.

I'm with the others who suggest hemming the sweater/vest thing-a-ma-jig. It's just an odd length.

The suit is awesome.
As for the vest maybe you could wear it over a maxi dress with a belt? Maybe?

Oh, hahaha!!! I literally laughed out loud at that first outfit. You're so funny!

I think your long sweater looks cute worn the way you did, but other than that, I'm at a loss. If you want to wear it another way, like the other bloggers have said, maybe you could hem it?

Why did everyone laugh? I own that jumpsuit too. I wear it to weddings. :)
Ok, just joking. But really - if you were on either the Crosby Show or Full House & added a belt to the jumpsuit it could work.
As for the sweater, I agree that you have two options:
1) Hem it up & use the extra fabric on another project.
2) Donation pile. It reminds me too much of something Sabrina the Teenage Witch would wear. :)

I'd chop off the sleeves (to make it a true vest) and chop off some of the length, so it fits more like a tunic. Then wear it over a patterned shirt or dress. You could also remove the tie and wear it with a belt instead.

Jumping on the bandwagon here and telling you that at first I was wondering why you decided to pull that suit out of the closet...that being said...you could cut it AND the vest to the hip and make a really top and vest. I'm so proud of you for not walking away from the free goods!

I freakin' love you girl Nuff said!

Your hilarity is amazing.

Loved the jumpsuit!! I'm not sure of the best way to style the vest as it is, but I like the idea of shortening the length, and pairing it with a wide belt.

That jumpsuit has winner written all over it. And honestly, I like it better than the vest. So my vote is for tossing the vest. And of course wearing the jumpsuit more often is a must. Why wasn't it your remix item?

Okay, lots of comments on this one--awesome! I had to read them and then comment that I didn't realize that vest thingy had sleeves! Definitely cut those off and trim the whole thing about 6 inches at least and maybe you could salvage it. You know, because I'm a fashion expert and everything, so I know these things.

Rob said...

from Lorena: I wanted to comment, but it's all already been said. Brittany stole the words from my mouth, except that I'd say it needs trimmed at least a foot if you're going to try to use it. I also am a fashion expert.

Rob said...

from Lorena: no, on second look, probably at least two feet.

Oh, by the way, you are hilarious. Also already been said. But I am thinking it too. Love that the neighbors caught you modeling. Ha!

I laughed out loud when you said your husband was too embarrassed for you to take a pic outside! I definitely think the solution is to just wear the vest/sweater thing with the jumpsuit. PS- you are totally gorgeous, and I love your outfits (um...from other posts)! ;)
